198? : All Of The Above
Tuesday, August 30, 2011 Remember that scene in Hi Fidelity where Jack Black, almost like an involuntary music-geek spasm, blurts out a challenge to John Cusack, something like, "Top 5 Musical Crimes Perpetrated by Stevie Wonder in the 80's..."?
I'm not sure if it was the 80's shit filter (i.e. the victory of studio technology over common sense/taste/songwriting) or the fact that they were aging into the phase where, as an artist, you move your primary focus to your personal life instead of your art, but previously great names like Wonder, Elton John, Billy Joel, or Rod Stewart all went to the shitter starting around '84.
They never recovered, either. They all got swept up into the slick-live-band-all-wearing-black-suits thang.
Who am I forgetting? Maybe Springsteen? Jackson Browne? Carly Simon? James Taylor? Pink Floyd? Clapton?
The answer on the ScanTron is E :: All Of The Above.
